Shuila 3 — the Šuila to Enlil and Aššur

First English rendering located. A Vigslist translation.

October 22, 2026 · K.10261

Shuila 3 — the šuila to Enlil/Aššur: “August one, lord of heaven and earth”. Great Mountain Enlil, who decrees the destinies of the gods, the true shepherd who heaps the granary — in five scraps.

First English rendering located. The edition of record is Daisuke Shibata, HES 3 no. 3 (German). No English translation of this text was located in any source checked — stated that way on purpose: located, not proven absent.

Museum number: K.10261 (British Museum, Kuyunjik), with non-contiguous joins to K.4898 + K.4979 named on the record (after Shibata, Orient 45, p. 80). Bilingual fragment, Neo-Assyrian script, 8 inscribed lines. Photograph on the record. Composition: the šuila alim-ma umun an-ki-a, "August one, lord of heaven and earth," to Enlil/Aššur — eISL Shuila 3, Q009530. The record's own note names it: "Emesal-šuila alim-ma umun an-ki-a." Source: eBL Fragmentarium's served transliteration of K.10261 (fetched live, Wave C7; saved in this folder, ). eBL serves no translation for the tablet (0 #tr.en lines). Counting rule: a line counts part if a complete verb form or a glossed phrase survives; fragment if only isolated words or traces survive; whole only if a complete clause survives intact. A bilingual pair counts as one unit. Counts: 5 units — 0 whole / 0 part / 5 fragment / 0 invented.

Publication check (C7, Oct 22): the record's only EDITION reference is Shibata HES 3 no. 3 (German). #note: sigla grep (D6's lesson): the ATF's #note: lines carry bare numerals only ("1"–"4" — footnote markers keyed to Shibata's edition), and the record's notes carry the identification and the join, no hidden edition. The composition's other hunted candidates disposition elsewhere: K.15242 is the eršemma alim-ma umun ĝir₃-ra (HES 2 no. 14 — a different composition), and VAT.580 is Cohen's balaĝ umun še-er-mal an-ki-a (CLAM pp. 413–417) — neither is this šuila. Doors left on the face: (1) the HES 3 eyeball (no. 3, pp. 76–96); (2) the eISL score page (Q009530) — ORACC refused all night; (3) the joins K.4898 + K.4979 are named but their text is not served on this record — if collated, the witness grows; (4) CDLI is down.

The witness reading

Five broken litany units survive. The prayer opens on Enlil under his great names — great mountain, father of the black-headed people — and breaks off in a herdsman image: the true shepherd who gathers the fold. What is rendered is what the clay carries; the Akkadian glosses, where they survive, carry half of two units.

u 1 (lines 1–2). %es [alim-ma umun an-ki-a] dim#-gal# kur#-kur#-ra# a-a sag-gi₆-g[a] / [...] ša₂ KUR.KUR a-bu ṣal-mat qaq-qa-d[i] "[August one, lord of heaven and earth], great … of the lands, father of the black-headed [people]" / gloss: "… […] of the lands, father of the black-headed ones." (fragment: the incipit itself is restored; what the tablet actually preserves begins mid-line)

u 2 (line 3). %es [kur-gal {d}mu-ul-lil₂ giš-hur bi₂-in-gi-gi-am₃ kur-kur-r]a ag₂-da-ma-al-l[a] "[Great Mountain Enlil, who … the designs, who …] in the lands …" (fragment: kur-gal, "Great Mountain," is Enlil's standing name; the verb phrases are restored)

u 3 (lines 4–5). %es [na-ag₂ tar-tar di]m₃-me-er-e-n[e] / [... mu-ši]m NAM-MEŠ DINGIR-MEŠ "[… who decrees the fates] among the gods" / gloss: "… who decrees the destinies of the gods." (fragment: nam-tar, "to decree fate," is the prayer's governing verb — the same word family as Shuila 16's incipit tonight)

u 4 (lines 6–7). %es [u₃-mu-un umun-e tur₃-ra ṣu du₇-a amaš du₃-a sipa zi-da mu-uš]-tug₂?# im-in-ga₂-g[a₂] / [... re]-eʾ-u₂ ki-i-[nu (x x)] "[Lord, lord of the cattle-pen … of the fold — the true shepherd who …] he sets in place" / gloss: "… the true shepherd …" (fragment: the preserved tail names the shepherd — sipa zi-da, reʾû kīnu in both languages — Enlil as the herdsman of his people)

u 5 (lines 8–9). %es [guru₇ gu₂ gur-gur-re mu-lu-u₁₈-lu hul₂-l]e-eš-[am₃] / [... mu-na-ah-h]i-i[ṣ …] "[… the granary, heaping up the grain — the man …] with joy …" / gloss: traces only. (fragment: the closing image is agricultural abundance under the god; rendered only where words survive)
